“Taurine” … an ingredient that helps fight aging and “live a long healthy life”

Scientists have revealed that a deficiency in an element known as “taurine” may accelerate the aging process.

Researchers who analyzed amino acids in mice and monkeys found that this substance can slow aging, according to Sky News.

For the study, a team of international researchers examined blood samples and measured taurine concentrations at different ages in mice, monkeys and humans.

Approximately 250 female and male mice, regarding 14 months old — the equivalent of regarding 45 years in human terms — were used in the study. The researchers gave half of the mice a taurine supplement and the other half a control solution.

Mice given the supplements lived an average of 12 percent longer in females and 10 percent longer in males.

The researchers said this translates to between 3 and 4 additional months for mice, which is equivalent to regarding 7 or 8 human years.

Taurine – found mostly in meat, fish, eggs and some energy drinks – supports immune health and nervous system function.

The study also revealed that taking between 500 and 1,000 milligrams of taurine per day per kilogram of body weight was also associated with improvements in strength, coordination and cognitive function.

“Not only did we find that the animals lived longer, we also found that they lived healthier lives,” said Vigay Yadav, the study leader at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, in New York.

The effects of taurine were also tested in middle-aged monkeys.

The monkeys ate the ingredient every day for 6 months, and showed improvements in their immune systems, bone density, and overall metabolic health.

Study on humans

To understand things on a human level, the researchers also looked at data from a study of 12,000 adults aged 60 and over from Europe.

They found that people with higher levels of taurine were healthier, with fewer cases of type 2 diabetes, and lower levels of obesity and inflammation.

“The results are consistent with the possibility that (taurine) deficiency may contribute to human ageing,” said Professor Yadav.

The researchers also measured taurine levels in male athletes and subjects who participated in vigorous cycling before and following the activity.

The team explained that a “significant increase” in levels of “taurine” was seen in both athletes – such as runners and people who participated in cycling.

“Regardless of the individual, (taurine) levels increased following exercise, which suggests that some of the health benefits of exercise may come from the (taurine) increase,” Yadav added.

The team notes that taurine may be a promising anti-aging strategy.

Yadav explained: “The abundance of (taurine) decreases with age, so restoring (taurine) to a youthful level at an advanced age may be a promising anti-aging strategy … This study indicates that (taurine) may be a factor that helps us live a longer life.” And healthier.”
