Controversy between Forza Italia and Lega on the issue of ius soli. It was sparked by a post published by the Carroccio on its social channels that takes the title of an article in Repubblica («The PD relaunches ius soli. FI opens a gap on the right») accompanied by an image showing the faces of PD secretary Elly Schlein and Forza Italia leader Antonio Tajani: «The citizenship law is fine as it is, and the numbers of concessions (Italy first in Europe with over 230 thousand citizenships issued, ahead of Spain and Germany) prove it. There is no need for ius soli or shortcuts», Matteo Salvini’s party writes in support of the post.

The social initiative, however, did not please the Azzurri. Replying to Adnkronos, was Forza Italia spokesman Raffaele Nevi: «Our position is not to attack our allies, unless they say things against the program we have commonly given ourselves. Therefore, we stigmatize this post». «For us – he points out – the adversary is the left and above all this left that accuses us of racism, mistaking the ius soli for a question of racism or non-racism. They are two completely different things, which must be kept separate. We are without ifs and buts against racism». Nevi then also goes into specifics on the ius soli: «On the issue of citizenship there has been an open debate for years, everyone has their own positions. We – explains the Azzurri spokesman – have ours, also brought forward by President Berlusconi: we are possibilists on the question of the ius scholae, but since it is not something that is part of our government program, we respect the position of others. It would be nice if everyone did the same thing».

Returning to the post published this morning by the League, Nevi observes: «Every time someone tries to put their allies in a bad light, they harm themselves. We are convinced that, instead, we need to strengthen the coalition and take votes away from the left: especially in the moderate left, there are many voters who no longer recognize themselves in Schlein’s vision and are looking carefully at FI precisely because of its liberal nature, attentive to civil rights. We – he concludes – are moving forward on our path».
