According to an article published in 2019, Harvard University School of Medicine claims that masturbation can have a positive effect on vaginal atrophy. Indeed, masturbating increases blood flow to the genital area which restores elasticity to the tissues and therefore reduces vaginal dryness. Postmenopausal women who have regular sex have fewer symptoms of vaginal atrophy than those who do not.

To arrive at this conclusion, a study SWAN was carried out with 3,000 women aged 42 to 52s in the United States. The latter were subjected to a questionnaire and a blood test. Participants had to explain how often they had wanted sex alone or with a partner over the past six months, how many relationships they had had and how many times they had masturbated over the same period….
