Attitude of the population towards security policy in Austria
Vienna (OTS) – For four years, the Ministry of Defense has been conducting annual surveys to find out how the Austrian population perceives the security and threat situation in Austria, Europe and worldwide. The population’s views on defense policy and the assessment of the image of the armed forces are also recorded. As in the previous year, the Austrian population perceives the security situation as more pessimistic than in previous years. Compared to the previous year, the survey shows a more positive assessment of the Armed Forces in terms of services, training and equipment. The attractiveness of the Armed Forces as an employer has also increased.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “The Forward Mission aims to ensure that the Federal Army enters the 21st century strong so that it is best prepared for all threat scenarios. We now have the means to strengthen military national defense capabilities in accordance with the ‘2032plus’ recovery plan and to modernize branches of the land forces, air forces, cyber forces and special operations forces. The Forward Mission is also reflected in the survey on the population’s security policy opinions.”
Around 70 percent support the budget increase for the armed forces and the use of budget funds to improve the mobility, equipment and self-sufficiency of the barracks. A large proportion of the population also stated that awareness of the importance of national defense should be increased. Around 80 percent are in favor of school-age young people being informed at school regarding the purpose and tasks of the armed forces. Support for neutrality remains largely unchanged, with around 75 percent of the population still in favor of it.
The survey was carried out by the Linz Market Institute in September and October. For this purpose, 1,406 Austrians aged 15 and over were surveyed as part of a representative survey.
