Dimos Zaharos presents one of the most popular plays of the period of Greek drama.
On Saturday, August 24, at 9:00 p.m., in the courtyard of the Zacharos Primary School, directed by Elli Vozikiadou, “O Popolaros” by Grigorio Xenopoulos will be presented.
At the end of the 19th century, the people of Iptanissos and especially of Zakynthos are divided into two warring camps: the lords and the populars.
During the summer in Bohali, on the estates of her father, Count Dimara, Elda is struck by the meaningless company of her two silly cousins, Kiara and Teresa. To pass the time, she allows the young Zepo Pemonaris – a popular native and law student – to approach her. When they return to the city, Zepos thinks that Elda truly loves him until he is informed by Teresa, her cousin, that Elda no longer wants to see him again and he becomes angry, reacts and claims her. Elda’s father becomes furious because at that time he is preparing to marry her off to an Englishman of the same social class. Zepos rebels and turns against the entire class of nobles, but the lords are strong. Will he, a “popular man” manage to put up with them and win the heart of his beloved Elda?
Respecting the rare writing of the great Greek writer, the performance is given in a classical line, in the atmosphere of the time it takes place and is addressed to all ages.
