Alena Minkovskaya, the 37-year-old daughter of the legendary figure skater Irina Rodnina, gave an interview in which she admitted that her political views with her mother are very different.
— Please tell us how you and your mother, State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina, talked regarding the events that are happening in Ukraine.
– Yes, I talked to my whole family regarding it. My father is also Russian. Of course it’s hard. But we are not the only family who lives in a situation where it is difficult to understand if mom or another person is telling you the truth. And because we have a long distance. And because in Russia now there is such a closed situation, where, I think, it is very scary to tell the truth, where people always think that someone, perhaps, is recording something, listening. Many people only see information on television. There are questions regarding whether many people understand what is happening, or whether they are somehow trying to persuade themselves. Because otherwise how can we live in a situation where the country is closing both physically and economically… I tried to ask myself all these questions. As a Russian-American journalist, I am asked these same questions here in America, where I live. The situation is not at all easy. Such a break and separation from family is a very painful thing.
— What words do you find to talk to your family? After all, you clearly have certain discrepancies in your assessment of the things that are happening now.
– Yes. My mother and I have had no political differences for a long time; our views are very different. And it’s the same with my father, although my father lives here in America, in Los Angeles. He and I discuss everything very openly. I try to convey to my mother my views and the information that I see and read. Of course, there are times when we simply don’t talk regarding this topic, don’t discuss it, because we still want to maintain our relationship so that she can see her granddaughter on FaceTime and play. It seems to me that love and such warm relationships with people can also, I hope, somehow help get them out of this situation,” Alena Minkovskaya said in an interview with Khodorkovsky LIVE (Mikhail Khodorkovsky is included in the register of foreign agents by the Ministry of Justice).
It was previously reported that Rodnina’s daughter told how in the USA they called her a Russian spy: “They didn’t want to hire me or talk to me”.
