The Polish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs accuses the Russian ambassador of neglecting his post

Szejna told private broadcaster RMF24 on Tuesday that it was not an “invitation” but a “summons to Ambassador Sergey Andreyev to provide explanations under the Vienna Convention.”

The deputy foreign minister added that the incident was a “violation of international law” and “caused concern to our allies”.

He mentioned that a missile fired from a Russian fighter jet that violated Polish airspace was considered a “terrorist act” and the ambassador was summoned.

Mr. Andreev told Russian state media the day before that he thought “there is no point in discussing this subject without providing any evidence.”

The diplomat said he decided to ignore the summons to the Polish Foreign Ministry, which he said he received on Monday morning.

A. Szejna said that, in his opinion, S. Andreyev demonstrated “abandonment of the diplomatic post”.

“He knew that (Foreign Affairs) Minister Radoslav Sikorski would discipline him, so he decided not to come,” said A. Szejna. “He ignored the summons, which was also a violation of the Vienna Convention.”

He added that every diplomat who receives a summons from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country to which he is accredited must immediately come to this ministry.

“This is another example of disregard for the law by the Russian Federation,” he said.

Early Sunday morning, the operational command of the Polish Armed Forces reported on the X social network that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace near Oserdów in the southeast of the country, flew through its territory for 39 seconds and returned to Ukraine.

The military said the missile was tracked by military radar throughout its flight.

Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland had activated all air defense systems and that the missile would have been shot down “if there had been the slightest indication that it was targeting a target on Polish territory.”

A similar incident occurred on December 29, 2023, when a Russian missile remained in Polish airspace for several minutes.

In November 2022, two people were killed when a Ukrainian air defense missile landed in the Polish village of Przewoduwo, near the Ukrainian border.

Before it was determined that the missile was Ukrainian, there were fears that NATO, of which Poland is a member, would be drawn into an escalation of conflict with Russia if its collective defense provisions were invoked.
