The police top sports squad combines sports and police careers. Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst, former beach volleyball doubles team, look back on their application and training with the police in the official police podcast “Funksprechen an Alle” and give an insight into the life of a top police athlete.

Team spirit is not only required by the police, but also in sports – why not combine these two activities? The top sports squad of the police has exactly this goal: to train top Austrian athletes to become police officers in order to guarantee them an exciting and varied career during and following their sporting career. In order to apply to join the police elite sports squad, athletes must prove their success, formulate sporting goals and be determined to work as a police officer. After a successful application, the police admission test follows and if the feedback is positive, the athletes start with the basic training. The police top-class sports squad currently has around 80 members. Two successful members of the squad are Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst, beach volleyball player and former duo. Still competitors in the junior class, they became a team in autumn 2011. The rest is a success story: the two reaped state championship titles, three-time Olympic participation and numerous medals at European and World Championships before they went their separate ways in August 2021.

The squad as mental support

Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst did not initially have the police top sports squad on their radar. The two were previously at the Army Sports Center until Clemens had to vacate his place following a year of membership due to a cruciate ligament rupture. While playing tennis with Marc Digruber, the conversation turned to the police top-class sports squad. The district inspector and former ski racer convinced the beach duo to apply to the police elite sports squad, which happened in 2018. “It’s very important to know that you have a safety net. It’s easy to get injured or end your sporting career – the squad allows you to move on to another career that interests you in that case.” , says Clemens Doppler. “With this in mind, you train differently, you play differently. That’s mental support that you can’t ignore,” emphasizes Doppler.

Sporty basic police training

The basic police training for top athletes lasts five years – in contrast to the classic basic training, which ends following two years with the service examination. The reason for this is to offer athletes a better compatibility of their careers. Example: At beach volleyball tournaments, doublers and hosts did not unpack the learning documents on the players’ bench, but did so during the flights to the competitions. The two of them remember the last four weeks before the service exam as being particularly intensive – even the training units were exceptionally reduced during this time.
