The freedom convoys, a motley protest of people opposed to health measures, call to join the center of Brussels and its European district on Monday. The Belgian authorities banned the demonstration.
The federal police are holding mobile checks on Sunday evening, essentially focusing “on the monitoring of access roads and major traffic axes in the direction of Brussels“, explained the spokeswoman of the federal police An Berger.
We approach them and inform them
“If we come across people taking part in the convoy, we approach them and inform them. Drivers receive a leaflet explaining what they can and cannot do.”
The police will only intervene if absolutely necessary. “At first, we act administratively. It is only as a last resort and in consultation with the prosecution that we go to the judicial stage.”
For now, the situation is calm on the Franco-Belgian border. It is unclear whether the convoy will cause major disruption. “We are constantly monitoring the situation and remain in close consultation with France. At the moment, individual vehicles cross the border but certainly not in convoy. Everything seems calm at the moment and we hope it will stay that way.”added the federal police.
