Special attention will be paid to driving on the second lane of the A1 highway Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipėda – in sections where such driving is prohibited for heavy vehicles. Truck and bus drivers caused 246 traffic accidents this year, during which 19 people died and 284 road users were injured.
November 11-17 preventive control of road users initiated by the European Roads Policing Network ROADPOL (European Roads Policing Network) will take place throughout the country – the technical condition of cargo vehicles (maximum permissible weight greater than 3.5 t) and buses, the sobriety of drivers, the use of seat belts will be checked , comply with the permitted speed, work and rest, cargo transportation procedure and other requirements, or have the necessary documents.
The Lithuanian Police, responding to reports that truck drivers ignore road signs installed on highways prohibiting driving in the second lane on certain road sections, will closely monitor the behavior of drivers on the A1 highway.
“Officials will assess whether the behavior of truck and bus drivers on the road does not endanger traffic safety, whether they comply with the requirements of the Road Traffic Rules and have proper documents,” says Vytautas Grašys, head of the Public Order Office of the Police Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania.
Trucks are prohibited from driving in the second lane on the A1 section of the highway between Vilnius and Kaunas, where there is the highest traffic intensity (the section from Grigiškii 17.8 km to 99 km in the increasing direction of kilometers and from 97 km towards Vilnius in the direction of decreasing kilometers).
“When HGV drivers try to pass another HGV traveling at a similar speed in the first lane, they obstruct traffic and even endanger those vehicles that are allowed to drive faster than HGVs on motorways. Such violations of road traffic rules by truck and bus drivers can cause serious danger to other drivers and passengers. Therefore, such control actions are necessary in order to ensure the safety of road users”, says Deputy Minister of Transport Mindaugas Tarnauskas.
During the raids, the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration officials will be able to check according to the tachograph data whether the driver of the cargo vehicle did not exceed the speed limit when driving in the second traffic lane.
The police remind that trucks with a maximum permissible mass of more than 3.5 t, as well as combinations of these trucks and trailers, buses with trailers are allowed to drive on highways and highways at a speed not exceeding 90 km/h, on roads with an asphalt or concrete surface – at a speed not exceeding 80 km/h, on other roads – at a speed not exceeding 70 km/h. By buses without trailers (including school buses) on motorways – at a speed not exceeding 100 km/h, on highways – at a speed not exceeding 90 km/h, on roads with an asphalt or concrete surface – at a speed not exceeding 80 km/h, on other roads – at a speed not exceeding like 70 km/h.
According to the data of the traffic accident information system, during 10 months of this year, drivers of cargo vehicles (maximum permissible weight greater than 3.5 tons) caused 115 traffic accidents, during which 19 people were killed and 128 road participants were injured. Bus drivers caused 131 traffic accidents in which 156 people were injured.
Such a preventive action has been organized for the 3rd time this year. Control measures for trucks and buses on the country’s roads were carried out in 2024. February 19-25 and May 13-19. In total, nearly 7,000 vehicles were checked and 280 traffic violations were detected, of which 270 were committed by truck drivers and 10 by bus drivers.
