A teacher from Cégep de Chicoutimi found an original way to capture the attention of his students. He records podcasts to give them the opportunity to maximize their study time.
Since then, Benoit Rochefort has noticed that the level of motivation has increased in his classes.
He has just recorded his 100th podcast as part of his accounting and management course at Cégep de Chicoutimi. This technology allows him to better capture the attention of his students.
“It’s regarding being able to be as interesting as possible to keep them, to interest them without obligation,” said Benoit Rochefort.
The idea came to him three years ago, in the middle of a pandemic. The studies department had asked the teachers to innovate in their teaching method.
“In the suggestions there was: make podcasts. I had the equipment. It started to mature over the summer and at the beginning of August, I started opening my business, putting together the gingle, the setup and building what the podcast might be,” he said. -he explains.

Benoit Rochefort is now entering his seventh season and his podcasts have been downloaded more than 40,000 times. They are also available on all platforms under the name ”Ben lala”, as a nod to the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.
“I’m a fan of radio,” he said. I really believe that what you listen to allows you to create a certain imagination. I think it can help us better understand certain concepts that can be abstract.”
Motivation
Benoit Rochefort has a cohort of around 100 students. Since podcasts made their way into his classes, the level of motivation among his students has increased.
This tool is intended to complement the courses to allow them to optimize their study time outside of class in order to adapt to their busy schedule.
Podcasts can replace the famous required readings and perhaps, eventually, courses.

“It doesn’t come from a notebook, he does interviews with his guests,” said a student. It allows students to see other initiatives than regular teaching, it’s much more interactive.”
“It’s a change from traditional teaching which is a little outdated,” emphasized his classmate.
Inspiration
The direction of studies at Cégep de Chicoutimi hopes that Benoit Rochefort’s initiative will inspire other teachers to follow suit.
“It’s a tool that reaches the 2023 generation. I think it can even be a tool to help these students succeed,” said the director of studies, Christian Tremblay.

He adds that Benoit Rochefort and another teacher have submitted a project to develop this tool in more depth this winter. They want to help other teachers who would be interested in integrating this tool into their lesson plan.
The Cégep de Chicoutimi also wishes to inspire other educational institutions across the province to take initiatives of this kind in order to reach young people in a different way.
