He Carmen Funes municipal museum celebrates 39 years of life this November 1 and as part of the activities proposed to share with the public there is the possibility of access the sector where the fossil collection is kept. The institution receives visitors from all over the country and from different parts of the world.
How each November 1, the museum that houses the fossils found in the surroundings and that make up the paleontology collection, the area is open to the general public. Throughout the year this sector is restricted and is only allowed for researchers, specialists and scholarship holders.
Over almost four decades the institution grew thanks to the discoveries that were made throughout this time and the development of the scientific research that was carried out. The first of them was the discovery of Argentinosaurus Huinculensis, the herbivore largest in the world.
Another of the greatest treasures that this institution preserves is the “clutch” of dinosaur eggs rescued in Auca Mahuida. These eggs have fossilized dinosaur embryos inside and they also caused a huge impact on the international scientific community.
However, there are other findings that did not have the impact of these two cases, but did allow us to advance in the knowledge of the species that lived in Patagonia and their evolution. In total, there are 20 holotypes of fossil materials.
To visit this area that houses the vertebrate paleontology collection, you can go in the morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and in the followingnoon from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Carmen Funes, which has the honorary director, Rodolfo Coria, was created in 1984 and operated for several years in the space where the popular and municipal library is today. Although the paleontological sector is what captures the attention of visitors, there is another part dedicated to the history of the towns.
The entity is located on Córdoba Avenue – the name of Route 22, at the entrance to Plaza Huincul and can be visited individually or in groups.
