Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. The duo of promising young attackers who are likely to make many, many sparks in the years to come.
But, on the sidelines of the opening of the regular season of the NHL, one can wonder who would be the perfect candidate to be paired with young people on the first line of the Montreal Canadiens.
I’ll tell you right off the bat: it doesn’t really matter. At least, that’s the opinion I share. I explain.
Suzuki and Caufield are two different players. The center is more known for his reliability on the 200 feet of the ice, while the winger is distinguished by his offensive talent. The two complement each other very, very well.
I don’t want to push the note too much, but it reminds me a bit of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Two guys who were transferred together very early in their career and who had their share of success on the same line.
I’m not comparing Cole Caufield to Alex Ovechkin, though. And I’m not comparing Nick Suzuki to Nicklas Backstrom either. But, I think you understand where I’m coming from.
In short.
The two young people have talent that overflows from their ears. That said, the one who will be paired with their trio (Josh Anderson, Juraj Slafkovsky, Sean Monahan, Jonathan Drouin) should look good, since he will only have to follow them.
Because yes, they are that good.
Either way, today’s NHL… It works with duos. No threesomes.

Obviously, there are certain aspects that come into play. And I am aware of that.
Suzuki and Caufield are not big guys. Me, I would like to see Josh Anderson start the year with them on the front row because of his size and his ability to get the puck in the corner of the rink.
But, it is not Anderson who will dictate the success of the two kids. It’s not Sean Monahan, it’s not Mike Hoffman, it’s not Jonathan Drouin. They are Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield.
Both kids have reached the point where they will rely on each other on the ice to guide the club offensively. They are capable of creating their own scoring chances and this has the potential to benefit the third player paired with them.
However, I can’t wait to see what Martin St-Louis will try to do during the season. Because we agree on one thing: changes of lines, there will be a ton of them this year.
A lot of
