Wendy Goyvaerts’ daughter was at a friend’s house when she bit into a stick to be put in the freezer to use as an ice cube and sold at Action. “When I went to get her, I saw the empty package lying there. She confirmed to me that she had drunk it, but that it was ‘a little gross, mom’”, tells the mother to our colleagues from HLN.
While she initially showed no symptoms, the situation deteriorated the next morning. Vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, loss of consciousness… Her mother then took her directly to the emergency room, where she was given a drip. The poison control center confirms that the liquid in these sticks is toxic because of carboxymethyl glucosphate, a thickening agent.
If the situation of the little girl has improved following two days, the mother warns today. “The plastic is so thin that it happened quickly,” she explains. According to Action, which she tried to reach without result, an investigation will be carried out into the incident.
