A despicable act. On which the police are already investigating, to understand if it was a stupid act of vandalism or something much more serious. Last night in Florence, in the gardens of Lungarno del Tempio, the plaque dedicated to the anti-mafia judge Antonino Caponnetto, a magistrate who died in 2002, was completely destroyed.

“I think it’s a shameful act of targeted vandalism, although I hope I’m wrong and that it’s just an idiot. It’s still an act that’s the result of the degradation of the garden, where the situation has gotten much worse over time, especially in the last month, as we have promptly reported,” Salvatore Calleri, president of the Caponnetto Foundation, told the Firenzetoday portal. “I was notified this morning around 9:30 by some citizens who frequent the garden and know me. We’ve recently reported several incidents, from the harassment of young girls to a beating organized by a group of Albanians to another settling of scores between Maghrebians, in addition to drug dealing. All of this happens in that context, it’s a desire to appropriate a territory. But more generally, breaking the license plates of those who fought the mafia is a really bad sign.”

Numerous testimonies of closeness from the Tuscan political class. “A vile gesture that discredits the memory of the anti-mafia judge Antonino Caponnetto. All my solidarity with the Foundation dedicated to him. We will restore the plaque as soon as possible”. The mayor of Florence, Sara Funaro, wrote on her X profile. The municipal police are examining the images taken from public cameras in the area to identify the criminals, even from a distance, during the arrival and escape phases. “In addition to the most absolute solidarity with the Foundation – recalled the regional councilors of Fdi, Elisa Tozzi and Sandra Bianchini – there is an obligation to highlight the conditions of degradation in which a beautiful garden like the one in Lungarno del Tempio finds itself. A condition, unfortunately, similar to numerous other green areas in the city of Florence, Cascine first and foremost. It will be up to the police to establish the nature of this horrendous gesture”.
