The PixelOpus studio announces the end of its adventure – News

Entwined and Concrete Genie, this is the final CV of PixelOpus, a team formed 10 years ago in a rather unconventional way since it was incubated within the headquarters of PlayStation, in San Mateo, from a group of young graduates supervised by veteran Dominic Robilliard (The Getaway, Star Wars 1313). The existence of this team was revealed at the same time as their first game, Entwined, on stage at E3 2014, where the game was announced as available immediately on the PlayStation Store. The story might have ended there, but PixelOpus subsequently confirmed its status as a full-fledged studio by releasing the most ambitious and benevolent Concrete Genie in October 2019.

Evil genius

While PixelOpus was one of the PlayStation studios whose next game we might hope to discover soon, the announcement of this closure reminds us that while Sony Interactive Entertainment has multiplied studio acquisitions since 2021, no structure is immune to an unpleasant surprise. Not much was known regarding the PlayStation 5 game in development at PixelOpus, although a job posting from June 2021 revealed an interesting clue: the small team was working in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation on an Unreal Engine 5 game.

« Dear friends, the PixelOpus adventure has come to an end. As we look to new horizons, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the millions of passionate gamers who have supported us and our mission to create beautiful and imaginative games with heart. We are very grateful to you! »

A few minutes following the publication of this tweet, an SIE spokesperson confirmed that the studio will close its doors on June 2, without it being known if its residents will be able to bounce elsewhere in the organization of the group. ” PlayStation Studios regularly assesses its portfolio and the status of studio projects to ensure they meet the organization’s short- and long-term strategic goals. As part of a recent review process, it was decided that PixelOpus would shut down on June 2. »
