This new variant of Covid-19 presents new symptoms affecting the skin and eyes. Is it dangerous?

In 2023, Covid-19 is still all the rage. Last August, a new variant was detected in France. Named Pirola, it would present very specific new symptoms, we explain.

A new variant

The Pirola variant, BA.2.86 of its scientific name, appeared in France on August 31, 2023. Shortly before, Doctor Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization had warned, during a G20 ministerial meetingthat the WHO placed this variant under surveillance.

The Pirola variant is a sub-variant of BA.2 and therefore a sub-variant of Omicron. There would be around 40 cases in France in September 2023, according to Point.

The symptoms are generally all similar to those of Covid: fever of 38°, severe cold, headaches, fatigue, diarrhea… But this time new symptoms have been detected.

Irritation and rash

It was Doctor Johannes Uys from the Boradgate general practice who revealed that some patients with this variant had symptoms affecting the skin and eyes. “Unlike most previous variants, Covid Pirola can cause visible facial symptoms such as eye irritation and rash,” he said. The Mirror.

These symptoms might therefore cause red patches accompanied by pimples on the face and irritation in the eyes.

The Pirola variant is no more dangerous than the others

Despite these new symptoms, the new variant does not remain more dangerous than the previous ones. Massimo Cicozzi, director of the Molecular Statistics and Epidemiology Unit of the Biomedical Campus of Rome said in theJournal Of Medical Virology relayed by Express that there is currently “no indication to consider the Pirola variant as a mutation of significant concern”.
