Since the creation of the African School of Medicine in Dakar in 1918, African women have entered the health professions. Initially midwives or visiting nurses, their role has since been recognized, both in practice and in the transmission of medical knowledge. Some of them have had a significant role in the management of epidemics, such as in maternal and child health.
