United States – On March 3, 1973, a unique phone call took place, which marked the beginning of a technological development that changed the face of the world and made life following it look different from before.
On that day 51 years ago, American engineer Martin Cooper, head of the automotive telephony division at Motorola, approached his competitor, Joel Engel, head of research at Bell Laboratories, and said to him: Hello, are you Joel? Guess where he called from…? I’m calling you from a real cell phone! And now I’m crossing the road on Sixth Avenue!
This connection marked the beginning of a new era in human communication. Martin Cooper later recounted his impressions of his rival’s reaction, saying: “I don’t remember what he said at the time, but I thought I heard his teeth grinding!”
This engineer then used a Dynatac mobile phone, which weighed 1.15 kg and was composed of two thousand parts, and its battery charge was sufficient for 20 minutes of conversation. Motorola’s development of the first mobile phone model took 10 years and cost 90 million US dollars.
In the early 1970s, car radio phones appeared, weighing between 12 and 14 kilograms, and were powered by a car network. Accordingly, Martin Cooper realized that he might develop a relatively small cell phone.
This American engineer said that the most difficult thing he faced was convincing the Federal Communications Commission that private companies would need free frequencies to connect cellular communications.
On that memorable day, April 3, 1973, the first tests were conducted on the roof of the 50-story Capital Alliance building in New York, where the base station was installed. The first model of the station might connect more than 30 subscribers only to landlines.
That first prototype of a mobile phone never entered production. The first Motorola cell phone was put on sale in a serial manner on March 6, 1983, and according to other sources, this happened on October 13 of the same year. The cell phone weighed 800 grams, and its price was three thousand five hundred dollars.
Rudi Krolop, one of the phone’s developers, recalls this step by saying: “Customers were so impressed by the opportunity to always communicate with a mobile phone that thousands of people lined up to buy it, despite its great cost at the time.”
The retail price of the first mobile phone was equal to the cost of a car phone, while its acquisition was evidence of its status and financial ability.
Owners of the first cell phone describe it as being like a brick covered in plastic, with a keyboard mounted on one side and an antenna standing on top of the frame.
“Radiophone” Soviet Union:
It is noteworthy that the first samples of portable radios appeared in the Soviet Union in 1936, but their use was limited and they were not intended for the civilian field.
Later, in the 1950s, Soviet scientist Leonid Kupriyanovich achieved a breakthrough in the field of developing wireless communications. He conducted experiments in 1957 on a device he called a “radiophone.”
This Soviet inventor spoke in the magazine “Science and Life” at the time regarding his achievement, saying: “Wherever you are, you can always be found by phone. It is only necessary to dial the known number of your radiophone from any landline phone (even from a public phone). The phone rings in your pocket and the conversation begins. “If necessary, you can call any phone number in the city directly from the tram or bus, call an ambulance, fire or emergency vehicles, or call home.”
