The Phantom of the Opera in Vienna: Review of the Re-imagined Musical Production

Anyone who dares to approach Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical benchmark “The Phantom of the Opera” should not shy away from the comparison. This masterpiece has already been played too often. In the case of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, the pitfall goes back to 1988, when the charismatic Alexander Goebel as Phantom and Luzia Nistler as Christine delighted audiences for years.

Cameron Mackintosh has re-staged the Phantom spectacle, the premiere in German-speaking countries took place on Friday in the Raimund Theater. The new Phantom has become fresher, Mackintosh has dusted off the material based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, freed it from patina, and enriched it with pastiche (Hannibal dress rehearsal) and wit. The technical spectacle with the chandelier crash, pyromaniac interludes and the special effect of the phantom exit at the end once once more conveys one or two wow effects.

Paul Brown has created a very expansive stage design that will amaze audiences in theaters around the world. The descent into the phantom’s dungeon is breathtaking. Combined with the power of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s compositional stroke of luck, the new edition of the successful production is a recommended must for Phantom aficionados.

The Vienna production is directed by Seth Sklar-Heyn, who has been directing for Mackintosh for more than a decade. A lot has been achieved with the cast. Anton Zetterholm gives the obsessed, unhappily in love opera house ghost a lot of character. His phantom is less diabolical; following a few minutes he is in top form both vocally and in terms of acting. The language can still be improved, his “Angel of Songs” is currently still an “Angel of Liters”.

As Christine Daaé, Lisanne Clémence Veeneman fortunately foregoes any poor-ass mentality and is vocally up to the demanding role. Roy Goldman’s “Raoul” lacks a bit of emotion in terms of acting. Milica Jovanovic is great in all respects and originally funny as Carlotta, who is led by all the airs and graces.

Conclusion: Off to the next long run musical at the Raimund Theater (every day except Monday)!
