The peso, the currency that has fallen the most

MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— The shaky Mexican currency took the Argentine peso from first place on the list of the most losing currencies of the year, after the approval of the judicial reform in the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday.

The dying superpeso has been losing ground against the dollar for two days in a row and this morning reached 20.15 units per dollar, its worst level in two years, according to wholesale operations reported by Bloomberg. After taking the silver medal as the biggest winner in 2022 and 2023, the peso has depreciated 18.9% or 3.20 units since the beginning of 2024 and is at the bottom of the list of the 32 main currencies in the world.

The Argentine peso, the Brazilian real and the Turkish lira follow suit. At the other end of the ranking, the most appreciated currencies of the year are the Malaysian ringgit, the South African rand, the British pound and the Polish zloty.

At the close of the day, the peso managed to fall again. It ended at around 19.89 units per dollar, which meant an appreciation of 0.22% or 4 cents compared to the previous day.

We could say that the peso was affected by local political volatility, but corrected its trend due to economic figures in the United States and the decline of the dollar, commented specialists from the Monex financial group.
