Around 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday (local time), neighbors of an £800,000 house in a quiet cul-de-sac in Bushey, Hertfordshire, heard piercing screams and initially mistook them for the voices of a child. They later realized they were a woman’s desperate cries for help coming from the house where 25-year-old Louise Hunt, her sister Hannah, 28, and her mother Carol, 61, were being ambushed by a crossbow-wielding killer.
Immediately following the screams, silence reigned and the perpetrator fled, however the police had been notified and were on their way. The victims were the wife and daughters of BBC horse racing commentator John Hunt, whose voice is familiar to millions. According to the Daily Mail, it is believed that officers were able to contact him when they found the bodies and while he was returning from work at Lingfield Park.
Although the police and ambulance rushed to the house, they were unable to save the three victims who died at the scene. However, detectives soon tracked down a suspect thanks to security camera footage that showed a figure emerging from an alleyway directly behind the murder scene. Dressed in black, the man was recorded calmly walking away with the crossbow he had covered with a white sheet under his arm.
Security camera footage showed the man also carrying a heavy bag, where police feared he may have hidden the weapons he used to carry out the brutal attack. The killer is also seen passing within arm’s length of a neighbour, who was standing alone in her driveway petting a cat and appeared startled at the sight of a clumsily concealed weapon at 6.50pm.
Within hours, a national manhunt was underway for ex-soldier Kyle Clifford, who was named by police in a highly unusual move. The 26-year-old previously served in the Dragoon Guards for a short time before leaving following failing to impress the higher-ups.
The moment the authorities arrived at the scene of the crime, the Daily Mail reports in detail, citing the statements of a neighbor who said that when the armed police officers arrived, “absolute chaos” prevailed. “It was between 6.30pm and 7pm and it sounded like children, someone screaming, and then it was more shrill and I said, ‘That must be a woman screaming’, and within 15 minutes, it was absolute chaos. “We had armed police running down, yelling, ‘Stay home’ … they shut us down and basically put us on lockdown.” Police searches were mainly focused on Hertfordshire and North London yesterday because police did not believe the suspect had time to get further away.
Police officers were checking passengers at London’s Victoria train station. Schools were later placed on lockdown as armed police raided the suspect’s home in Enfield, North London, regarding 14 miles from the crime scene. “They had blocked the road and led people away from the house they were going to. They were wearing full protective gear, weapons, shields and helmets – the kind you’d expect to see in riots.”
Dozens of officers from Scotland Yard and Hertfordshire flooded the area moments later following finding Clifford’s abandoned car. But within hours, the hunt had moved to a nearby cemetery, just a few minutes’ walk away.
The former security guard was finally found at Lavender Hill Cemetery shortly following 4.30pm. following apparently shooting himself with the crossbow. Armed police cordoned off the cemetery, and ambulances rushed to the scene. “I saw regarding ten officers come in. I was quite worried because they were armed and there were dogs with them,” said a witness. Around 20 minutes later Clifford was stretchered away from the scene and taken by ambulance to the Royal London Hospital.
Louise’s relationship with Clifford and information regarding the “difficult” breakup
Neighbors yesterday revealed that Clifford had been in a relationship with the Hunts’ youngest daughter Louise, but broke up with him a week ago. Their split is said to have upset her so much that she recently crashed her car into a pole outside the family home.

The family’s neighbors are shocked
Neighbor Glyn Nicholas, 77, told reporters: “Louise was a very good girl. She ran a dog grooming business from home. I heard she broke up with a boyfriend last week and she’s really upset regarding it.” Referring to her mother, he said: “Carol was a good, kind and quiet lady. He was at home many times.” “They were all very nice, a private family. Everyone was doing their own thing. Louise started a business a few years ago, and it was a thriving business – we all took our dogs there to be groomed. A very close family and they used to love the road. They had done a lot of work on their house over the years.”
