The power of the people decided to thank Rep. Bo Seung-hee Hwang, who is under police investigation due to suspicions of illegal political funds.
Shin Eui-jin, chairman of the People’s Power Audit Committee, met with reporters following the meeting on the 13th and said, “We plan to request an explanation from those involved and conduct an attendance investigation soon.” The Party Affairs Audit Committee may request disciplinary action from the Party Ethics Committee if the investigation reveals Hwang Bo’s misconduct. The result of the disciplinary action will affect whether or not to be nominated for the general election in April next year.
Rep. Hwangbo is suspected of receiving money and other valuables from candidates in exchange for nominations for district councilors and city council members ahead of the 2020 21st general election and 2022 local elections. In April of last year, a civic group in Busan accused Rep. Bo Hwang of these charges, and it is known that Rep. Bo Hwang was summoned and investigated several times as a suspect by the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency until recently.
Rep. Hwangbo is also being investigated by the police on suspicion that he received tens of thousands of won in cash, credit cards, luxury bags and apartments from Mr. A, the chairman of a real estate developer in Busan. In a police investigation, Mr. A was reported to have claimed that there was no legal problem with the provision of money and goods because Congressman Hwang Bo was in a common-law marriage relationship that was no different from his spouse. Rep. Hwangbo is known to deny the allegations.
The party affairs audit committee decided to continue an additional investigation on former lawmaker Kim Hyun-ah, who was sent to the prosecution last month on charges of receiving 42 million won in illegal political funds from former and current city council members.
