Therefore, it is perhaps not so surprising that we have a special fondness for the Chinese webshop Temu, which is both known and debated for its unusually low prices.
A new analysis from Danish Industry shows that North Jutland has the record for the number of purchases on the webshop.
Nationwide, 22 percent have made a purchase, while in North Jutland 28 percent have shopped at Temu within the last six months.
We are also the part of the country where, according to the analysis, the most people are familiar with the website. Three out of four people from North Jutland know or have heard of Temu.
This is a record that stands in contrast to the fact that the people of North Jutland overall shopped the least online in 2023.
– The interesting thing is that our e-commerce tracker shows that Northern Jutland has moved significantly in the second quarter compared to the second quarter last year. The region has experienced a significant increase in both the number of transactions and online consumption per month, says Jacob Kjeldsen, branch director at DI.
He believes that the website’s popularity is due to something that applies to the whole country.
– In general, we Danes love a good offer, and this also applies to the people of North Jutland. It is part of our mentality, and we enjoy sharing with our friends how much we have saved when we have made a good purchase, says Jacob Kjeldsen, Branch Director at DI.
Meets consumer needs
Many will probably see Temu as the place for a good purchase, which is confirmed by the fact that last week the website moved up as Danes’ second most favorite.
– If you look at it regionally, the people of North Jutland are some of those who help to drive Temu’s popularity in Denmark, he says.
Seen with consumer glasses, he can well understand that the website can be enticing.
– If you look at the website, they are fantastic offers. Temu are good at setting up their website, they have some very low prices and it’s easy to do business with them.
He believes that Temu hits the spot in terms of their cheap goods, which fit well with the Danish hawker spirit, but as a businessman he is worried.
– As traders, we have several concerns. We are concerned that the rules are not being followed, which creates unfair competition. We value competition, but it must be on equal terms.
– In addition, we are concerned about consumer safety, as the low prices often have a reason. In addition, there is a green challenge because we might end up buying more than we actually need, he says.
The EU is now on the case, and they have asked Temu to explain how they ensure that the products sold on their platform are not illegal.
Jacob Kjeldsen says that Temu has been given a deadline until the end of next month to explain to the EU Commission what they are doing.
– We cheer on the EU Commission and demand that Temu comply with the rules. When illegal products are detected, sanctions such as fines must be imposed. In the end, it could possibly mean that Temu has to be closed down for trade in Europe, says Jacob Kjeldsen.
