Birmingham’s most famous gang are set to perform on stage next fall, following the broadcast on the BBC, Arte and Netflix of the sixth and final season of the series.
From the shabby alleys to the planks. “Members of the fictitious Peaky Blinders gang swap their berets for tap shoes in a show that mixes contemporary dance and theatre”, s’amuse l’Evening Standard. Adapted from the eponymous series broadcast by the BBC and available in France on Arte and Netflix, the show directed by French choreographer Benoit-Swan Pouffer “will focus on the character of Thomas Shelby, played on screen by Cilian Murphy, and his wife, Grace (Annabelle Wallis)”.
Thought as a kind of prequel, Peaky Blinders. The Redemption of Thomas Shelby wants to “as much a love story as a biography to help us understand better” this tormented character, traumatized by being sent to the front during the First World War. Before becoming, with his family clan, the most powerful criminal in Birmingham between the wars. “The story and name of the Peaky Blinders are inspired by a real group of out-of-town bandits who reportedly blinded their enemies with blades sewn inside their headgear ”, recalls the London newspaper.
“Different Emotions”
“I think the format will surprise some fans, but dancing allows us to have other forms of emotion that are harder to describe in words”, assures the co-creator of the series, Steven Knight, at the origin of the project with the London company Rambert. On stage, specifies the evening newspaper, the 18 actors will be accompanied by a group of musicians “who will play unreleased tracks”.
Set for September 27 in Birmingham, home of the Shelbys, “the family that runs the Peaky Blinders”, the first performance will take place a few weeks following the release of the sixth and final season of the series. Several dates are then planned, from October 12 to November 6 at Troubadour Wembley Park in London, before a tour departure announced for 2023.
