“The patient suddenly got angry”: 2 paramedics want to help a seriously injured individual in Brussels but the situation degenerates

Two Brussels firefighters were verbally attacked on Tuesday evening by a stabbed individual they were trying to treat, Brussels firefighters spokesman Walter Derieuw and SLFP permanent delegate Eric Labourdette said on Wednesday. The police had to intervene and the rescuers filed a complaint.

The emergency team was called to intervene on Tuesday, around 8:45 p.m., avenue Jean Sobieski in Laeken to treat the victim of a knife fight. “The patient suddenly got angry and wanted to physically attack the officers”said Mr. Labourdette. “The police quickly intervened to subdue the man who then told the firefighters that he knew where they were working and was coming to ‘find them’.”

In shock, the two paramedics have not completed their service and are unable to work. “They filed a complaint”, added Walter Derieuw. “The Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service (SMUR) team from the UZ Brussel University Hospital was also on site. The service also intends to file a complaint and bring a civil action.” Psychological and emotional help has been put in place for the teams present, concluded the spokesperson for the fire brigade.
