The outstanding partnership connecting Morocco and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was emphasized on Thursday in Rabat during a flag-raising ceremony held to celebrate the 57th anniversary of this regional organization.

This ceremony also coincided with the commemoration of the Kingdom’s first year as a partner in the ASEAN sectoral dialogue and served as an opportunity to acknowledge the close cooperation between Morocco and this regional bloc while exploring future prospects for bilateral partnership across various sectors.
In a statement to MAP made during this ceremony, the Philippine Ambassador to Morocco, Leslie Baja, highlighted Morocco’s role as a stable and trustworthy ally on the African continent. He remarked that, with its status as a partner in the ASEAN sectoral dialogue and its position as a crucial gateway to Africa and Europe, numerous economic cooperation opportunities are arising between the regional grouping and Morocco.
Recalling the establishment of the ASEAN Committee in Rabat in 2015, Morocco’s accession to the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 2016, its status as an observer member of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly in 2020, and its recognition as an associate member of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization in 2021, the diplomat noted that the partnership through sectoral dialogue with Morocco holds a multidimensional aspect of cooperation targeted by 2028.
On this occasion, he emphasized that ASEAN is keen to initiate the implementation of practical operational programs for cooperation with Morocco over the next five years to establish a comprehensive framework for collaboration and to enhance commercial, political, and cultural exchanges.
The ceremony served to underscore ASEAN’s shared values and to strengthen the robust ties between member states and their partners, promoting peace and prosperity in the region and worldwide. Numerous figures from the diplomatic community participated in this ASEAN flag-raising event, including ambassadors accredited to Morocco as well as Moroccan and foreign officials.
