The Paris Bourse (+0.09%) continues to set new records

The Paris Stock Exchange gleaned 0.09% on Wednesday, setting new session and closing records, following the publication of a slight slowdown in inflation in the United States in March.

Inflation in the United States slowed to 5% year on year in March, doing better than expected, and thus stands at its lowest level in almost two years, according to the CPI price index.

Over one month, inflation came out at +0.1%, once morest +0.2% forecast, and following +0.4% the previous month.

However, underlying inflation – which excludes volatile sectors such as food or energy – remains tenacious, warn analysts: it rose to 5.6% over one year, once morest 5.5% in February.

“Core inflation is still showing signs of persistence, but the trend is probably down,” said Christophe Boucher, Chief Investment Officer of ABN AMRO Investment Solutions. “Much will depend on the evolution of rents in the spring and summer,” he adds.

These figures fuel the idea that the American central bank, the Fed, might soon stop raising its rates to tame inflation.

“The markets believe that a rate hike by the Fed is still scheduled for the beginning of May,” confirms Mr. Boucher. “But it might be the last.”

In an interview granted to the Börsen-Zeitung, the member of the ECB Council Robert Holzmann estimated for his part that inflation had not yet been broken in the euro zone and advocated further significant increases in key rates, including an increase by 50 basis points in May.
