The Palestinian president appointed a longtime economic adviser as the new prime minister

Mustafa was appointed prime minister less than three weeks following his predecessor resigned, Wafa said. After becoming prime minister, he will have to form a new government.

Late last month, former Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced the resignation of his government, which governs part of the occupied West Bank.

In his resignation, he called for new measures in light of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.

Since the end of the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas in October, Mr. Abbas has come under increasing fire for not strongly condemning Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip and the escalating violence in the occupied West Bank.

Since 2007, the Palestinian Authority, led by Mr. Abbas, has limited power in the occupied West Bank, while the Gaza Strip is controlled by Hamas.

Ms. Shtayyeh’s resignation comes as several countries, including the United States, are calling for a reformed Palestinian Authority that would take over leadership of all Palestinian territories following the end of the war in the Gaza Strip.

The war in the Gaza Strip was sparked by an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, which killed around 1,160 people in the Jewish state, mostly civilians, according to AFP news agency figures based on official figures.

Hamas militants have also taken regarding 250 hostages, and Israel says there are still regarding 130 hostages in the Gaza Strip, at least 32 of whom are believed to have been killed.

After vowing to destroy Hamas, Israel launched a massive military offensive that killed at least 31,341 people, mostly women and children, in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-run territory’s Health Ministry.
