Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Liverpool’s owner, businessman John Henry, said the team is not for sale, but he welcomed “new investors.”
The Fenway Sports Group, owned by Henry, has controlled the famous English club since 2010.
Earlier, press reports claimed that the “Fenway Sports” group was calling for offers to buy the club’s shares, to which the group responded by saying that it “will consider investing in new shareholders if it is in the interest of Liverpool.”
“The Reds are not for sale, but the new investment is under consideration,” John Henry said, in an interview with the Boston Sports Journal.
“I know there’s been a lot of talk regarding Liverpool FC, but I stick to the facts, we’ve just formalized an ongoing process,” Henry said, according to Eurosport.
He added, “Are we going to stay in England forever? No..Do we sell Liverpool? No..Do you talk to investors regarding the team?..Yes.”
He continued, “Is something going to happen there?..I think so, but it will not be a sale. Have we sold anything in the past 20 years?”
The “Reds” spent nearly 13 years under the supervision of the “Fenway Sports” group, and achieved a number of achievements and titles, including: the European Champions League, the Club World Cup and the English Premier League (Premier League).
This season, Liverpool ranks eighth with 35 points, on the ladder of the Premier League club ranking.
