For many players, horror has a name: Red Barrels. The Quebec studio has once once more lived up to its reputation with The Outlast Trials, a terrifying new experience pushing the saga to new – and nightmarish – heights. Sensitive souls refrain…

You’ve never heard of the saga Outlast ? Horror fans know it well, many of them having been branded by its previous chapters.

The Montreal studio Red Barrels takes the popular term literally survival horror (or survival horror): the main goal of the game is therefore “simply” to survive this adventure, and not to decimate hordes of enemies using a complete arsenal of barbaric weapons.

A task, obviously, much more complex to accomplish than some might think.

We only have the means [très] restricted and rudimentary to browse the different tables without losing our skin. A potion or a remedy can allow us to recover a portion of our vitality, while other accessories are intended to grant us a [souvent mince] one step ahead of enemies.

But forget the powerful cannons, indestructible armor or edged weapons to survive these affronts, as in the Resident Evil, Dead Space and others Evil Within of this world.

The result: an immensely anxiety-provoking, breathtaking and, let’s face it, extreme immersive experience. And according to what might be seen The newspaper during a virtual presentation of the game The Outlast Trialsthis new offering will be no exception.

It is therefore in the heart of the Cold War that Red Barrels today parachutes the players, while the infamous Murkoff corporation conducts devastating experiments on guinea pigs, let’s say, not very willing. Think brainwashing, physical torture and unspeakable acts of butchery. The image should look like this The Outlast Trials reserve for you.

Attention to detail

The preview we attended allowed us to discover three gloomy and dark universes: a disused amusement park, a police station teeming with lobotomized patients and a not very welcoming orphanage. Each place may have its own atmosphere, but one consistency remains: the attention to detail, however small. It’s just polished enough, it’s rendered with precision and, above all, it oozes blood, terror and decay. In short, it’s divine, will say fans of the genre.

It is also easy to recognize the main influences, as eclectic as they are precise, which have forged The Outlast Trialsto name the cinematic universes of Decadence II, Cube or 31, the underrated work of director Rob Zombie. To these are added nods to A crime in the head (The Manchurian Candidate) or theStanford Experiment. We let you discover the others for yourself.

Note that only PC users can now obtain The Outlast Trials in early access. A full review of the game – along with the traditional rating – will come when it hits consoles later this year. No date has yet been announced for this one.

The Oulast Trials is now available on PC.
