The Origins of ‘They Are Killing a Fool’: A Look Back at the Classic Phrase from Cara & Sello

After comedian Felipe Avello popularized the phrase “They are killing a fool,” fans of Cara & Sello (extinct Mega program) instantly discovered the origin.

This is an expression used by Zalo Reyes, in a particular meeting with his double Carlos Caro.

In dialogue with TVNBoris González Molina, son of the late singer, explained that the phrase had its origin in a situation in which a Carabineros officer was chasing a criminal in the passage where his father lived.

“A police officer runs in, and a thief runs by and climbs onto the roofs. You might hear gunshots, a big mess,” he explained.

Some time later, the “Sparrow of Conchalí” received a visit from Carlos Caro, an imitator of the singer, whom he received in a good manner. However, Caro returned the next day, and on that occasion the artist did not want to receive him, since he had recently argued with his wife Yolanda Molina.

At the impersonator’s insistence, Reyes lost patience, remembered the police officer’s story and yelled at Caro that the reason he mightn’t receive him was because they were “killing a jerk.”
