The opposition threatens to boycott the Tubize council: “close your ranks so that the city continues to function”

Two aldermen were missing this Monday, as well as one or the other municipal councilor. Not really surprising given the viruses and microbes circulating at the moment. This is what convinced the opposition to simply raise the alarm.

“The RC opposition will remain seated today, while the majority is not in number for the third time in a row,” declared Benoît Langendries.

If all the opposition elected officials had left the room, the quorum would not have been reached and the session would have been postponed. A process sometimes used to highlight repeated absences, even if it ultimately does not do much for citizens. This Monday, February 12, several questions from the opposition remained unanswered, due to a lack of elected officials to provide clarification.

”I don’t know the reasons for these absences, whether they are good or bad. I do not intend to ask for proof. But I warn that the RC group will not systematically top up over the next eight months. Mr. Mayor, close your ranks so that the City continues to function.”

Benoît Langendries once more declared that it was probably the last time that he participated in a session in these conditions. “There are more oral questions from the opposition than points on the agenda of the municipal council,” he lamented.

Jean-Marc Zocastello (Les Engagés, opposition) will do the same. “I partly share the point of view. If all members of the opposition stand up, the municipal council ends. I hope you are aware of this. Once in a while it might happen. We do not jeopardize a municipal council in the event of illness, but unjustified absences are a no-no!”

Mayor Michel Januth, very annoyed, was content to “guarantee that absences are justified”.

So the session took place this time. It remains to be seen whether the threats will be carried out in the coming months…
