Opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa said on August 5 that the opposition is not considering the possibility of repeating the presidential elections, which were already held on July 28.
“For us (the opposition) there is no new election. For us there was an election, and we demand that the results be recognized. The minutes that we made available to the public are not minutes of the opposition. They are minutes from the National Electoral Council (CNE),” said Guanipa in an interview with the radio station W Radio in Colombia.
Guanipa said that the opposition is attentive to the statements made by the presidents of Brazil and Chile to announce new actions starting Wednesday, August 7. The leader referred to the fact that the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, received his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on Monday, August 5, to talk about the situation in Venezuela.
“Today his allies, and I am talking about the presidents of Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Mexico, are telling him to release the minutes. These governments are asking him to tell the truth, because this situation is no longer sustainable. It seems to me that all this is the collapse of Nicolás Maduro,” he added.
The opposition leader and member of the Primero Justicia (PJ) party referred to the statements made by former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, in which she asked the Venezuelan government to show the voting records “for the legacy of Chávez.”

Several countries such as the United States, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay and Costa Rica have recognized the victory of Edmundo González. So far, the Electoral Power has not released the detailed results of the elections, while the opposition created a portal web in which it published more than 80% of the minutes issued by the voting machines.
The petition of the Freedom and Democracy Group to Boric
In the context of Lula da Silva’s visit to Chile, the Freedom and Democracy Group (GrupoLyD), made up of several former presidents of Latin America, asked the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, to recognize Edmundo González as the elected president of Venezuela in the elections of July 28.
“Recognizing Edmundo González as the president-elect of Venezuela will not only affirm democracy in that country, but will also send a strong message against attempts to consolidate authoritarian regimes in the region,” says a letter published on August 5 by the former presidents.
The coalition stressed that recognizing Edmundo González as president-elect would prevent Maduro from “consolidating the usurpation of power” and this would help prevent a new migration phenomenon.
“It will serve as an example of how democratic leaders stand firm in the defense of freedom and justice, without political calculations and above ideological differences,” the letter reads.
