The opposition denounces “judicial harassment” of González Urrutia after being summoned by the Prosecutor’s Office

Caracas, Aug 27 (EFE).- The largest anti-Chavez alliance in Venezuela, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), denounced «judicial harassment» to its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, after the “repeated” summons from the Prosecutor’s Officewho has called the opposition leader for the second time on Tuesday to give a statement as part of an investigation against him.

“The Democratic Unitary Platform of Venezuela denounces before the country and the world the judicial harassment to which our presidential candidate is subjected,” the PUD expressed through X, without reporting whether González Urrutia, who was initially summoned for Monday, attended the summons or maintained communication with the Prosecutor’s Office.

He also said that the summons “seeks to justify” a “mandate of execution” to “accentuate” the “persecution” against the opposition, who they believe won the presidential elections, despite the fact that the official result declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner, something that the PUD considers “fraudulent” and several foreign governments question.

“We express our solidarity and support for Edmundo González Urrutia, who is being persecuted because the government considers it a crime that he obtained no less than eight million votes by the will of the Venezuelan people,” the alliance said, despite the official result, also validated by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).

The PUD claims that the winner of the presidential elections is its standard-bearer, according to the “83.5%” of the electoral records that it says it has gathered from witnesses and table members, and which were published on a website, which is why the Prosecutor’s Office summoned the opponent, for the “alleged commission of the crimes of usurpation of functions and forgery of a public document,” among others.

On Sunday, through a video posted on social media, González Urrutia said that the Prosecutor’s Office “intends to subject him to an interview without specifying the condition in which he is expected to appear and pre-qualifying crimes that he did not commit.”

In his opinion, the Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, “has repeatedly behaved like a political accuser,” since – he asserted – “he condemns in advance and now promotes a summons without guarantees of independence and due process.”

While the government and the Attorney General’s Office have described the records collected by the opposition as false, several organizations have supported their veracity, including the Carter Center, which participated as an observer in the elections, invited by the National Electoral Council.
