The Austrian professional golfers Bernd Wiesberger and Sepp Straka experienced completely different opening rounds at the 150th British Open in St. Andrews, Scotland. While Wiesberger was in 55th place following a solid par round at the world’s oldest tournament on the 72 course on Thursday, Straka experienced a major false start. After a catastrophic 81 with nine strokes over par, the Austro-American was 153rd out of 156 participants.

Straka made a total of seven bogeys and a double bogey on the 16th hole in his Open debut. Wiesberger, who managed four birdies with just as many bogeys, presented himself completely differently. American Cameron Young took the lead at the $14 million event. The 25-year-old played a bogey-free round of 64 in the rugged dune landscape, putting him two shots clear of 2014 Northern Ireland British Open champion Rory McIlroy.

Tiger Woods had a bad day. Although he managed three birdies, he had to accept two double and five single stroke losses and was only 146 with 6 over par. The traditional event on the Old Course on the Scottish east coast is only the third PGA tournament for the 15-time major winner since his serious car accident in February 2021.
Only the top 70 of a total of 156 golf professionals make the cut in the fourth and final major tournament of the year and play for the winner’s check of 2.5 million US dollars over the weekend.
