‘The only’ craftsman of extinct brass and copper vessels in Sindh

Until a few decades ago province of Sindh The use of brass and copper vessels was very common in the society, but time changed and other vessels replaced them.

When the use of brass and copper utensils was common in Sindh, the artisans who made them were also very popular here. In Sindhi, a maker of copper and brass vessels is called thathakar.

But with the passage of time, as the practice of brass and copper vessels came to an end, their artisans also became extinct.

Hyderabad Amirs still make brass and copper vessels in the city.

Talking to Independent Urdu, Aamir said that his ancestors belonged to India and there they used to make brass and copper vessels.

He said that earlier the makers of brass and copper vessels used to be very artisans. ‘Today people don’t even know what copper is called.’

Aamir claimed that his factory is the only one left now, which manufactures brass and copper vessels.

Amir believed that the reason for the decline in the use of copper was the rise in its prices.

He said that earlier the cost of getting a brass or copper vessel fortified was 200 rupees whereas now the same work is being done for 1000 to 1200 rupees.

‘Most people have sold copper pots and bought steel pots.’

He said that a small copper pot is also available for at least three thousand rupees, while the price of a pot that holds one to one and a half kilograms is seven to eight thousand rupees.

Aamir said that brass and copper utensils are still being used in the houses where the elderly are present.
