The American pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced on Tuesday that it was preparing to launch a new vaccine specifically targeting the Omicron variant, next March.
Company CEO Albert Bourla said a vaccine targeting the Omicron variant of the coronavirus “will be ready in March and the company has already started manufacturing.”
“We have indeed already started to manufacture certain quantities”, he added in an interview with the American channel CNBC.
Bourla explained that the vaccine also targets other variants of the virus.
He added: “We hope to come up with something (a vaccine) that offers better protection, especially once morest infections, because protection once morest hospitalization and serious illness is now acceptable with current vaccines.”
The Omicron variant has caused an increase in infections in several countries around the world, especially in Europe, which has several countries, with more than 150,000 cases of infection every day.
According to the U.S. Associated Press agency, Europe has recorded around 7 million cases of the coronavirus in the past week alone.
The new Omicron variant, which was first detected in South Africa, appeared towards the end of November 2021.
