He was a record holder, the oldest dog in the world: Bobi was 31 years and five months old. According to media reports, the purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo died at home in Portugal. “Although he outlived every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth will never be enough for those who loved him,” wrote Dr. Karen Becker. The vet took care of the dog.

Bobi lived his entire life with the Costa family in the village of Conqueiros on the west coast of Portugal, having been born in an outbuilding with three siblings. Typically, dogs of this breed live to be 12 to 14 years old. Bobi’s siblings also far exceeded their life expectancy.

The owner attributed Bobi’s long life to the “quiet and peaceful environment in which he lives, his diet of human food and his freedom.”
