On Saturday, the Okas Museum opened its doors once more following two years of extensive renovations – this time with two large exhibitions.

On the first floor, where temporary exhibitions will be organized in the renovated museum, the works of Eevald Okas from the 1960s-80s are on display. paintings from the collections of the Estonian Art Museum and the Tartu Art Museum. On the second floor, there is a permanent exhibition of Okas’ work.

The Evald Okas Museum has been operating in the building that the artist acquired at the end of the last century, since 2003, when a summer exhibition venue was opened there following renovation.

The support of the Heritage Protection Board and the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Board helped make the house usable year-round. From the Norwegian measure, the museum received more than 355,000 euros for repairs, in addition to 150,000 euros in county development grants. Haapsalu city government supported the museum with 27,500 euros, private supporters have come to the rescue. Part of the money needed came from the proceeds of several auctions, where works by Evald Okas, which were part of the museum’s collection, were sold, as well as the creations of other artists from his family.

The first and second floors of the museum are currently in order. The Okas Museum can now start operations as a year-round art center.

The Okas museum is kept by his relatives and currently the artist’s grandchildren Üla Koppel and Mara Ljutjuk are responsible for its operation.
