An instruction dating from July 1 and emanating from the department of Kamel Beddari came to seal this orientation.

It is now done. The 2023/2024 academic year will be the official start of English language learning in the higher education sector. An instruction dating from July 1 and emanating from the department of Kamel Beddari came to seal this orientation. Addressed to the heads of university establishments, the document urges them to comply with the directives of the supervisory authority in the matter, and this, by putting in place the appropriate mechanisms.

“In application of the Minister’s directives, and as part of the preparation for the introduction of the English language as a language of instruction from the year 2023/2024, you are asked to organize meetings at the effect of constituting the teaching teams according to the subject or the module, and this before leaving on vacation”, indicates the said instruction. While the defense program for obtaining end-of-cycle diplomas has not yet been completed, officials and teaching staff will have to continue preparing for this new stage in the university curriculum.

Each team, whose presidency is entrusted to a member of the teaching staff, appointed or elected, must be made up of teachers of different grades, including lecturers and assistants in charge of practical work (TP) and tutorials (TD), is it specified. Supervision of the system is the responsibility of the National Commission responsible for monitoring and evaluating the training program for teachers and 3rd cycle students in the English language. During the month of July, she will make visits to university establishments.

Remember that upstream, several measures have been taken for better supervision and a gradual introduction of the language of Shakespeare. Last November, the supervisory authority called, via a press release announcing the creation of the digital platform for remote teaching of English, for a census of the teachers concerned by this learning: “As part of the reinforcement of the learning of the language English in higher education establishments and the monitoring of the evaluation of this training approach, the supervisory minister sent a letter to the presidents of the regional conferences of universities including the main orientations and indicators for the census of teachers that the sector intends to train by the end of the 2022/2023 academic year.” This approach provides for the training of at least 80% of science and technology teachers and 100% of those in social sciences and humanities.

On January 2, the Minister of Higher Education launched the said platform. The latter was developed with the American University Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “Algeria is becoming the only African country to equip itself with this digital platform with the support of MIT University”, underlined the first manager of the sector, specifying that 30,000 teachers will follow online training, and will be able to reach the levels B2, even C1.
