The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) approved this Friday the roadmap for the accession of Peru y Brazilbut not Argentina, despite the “positive talks” with this country.
The general secretary of the OECDMathias Cormann, announced at a press conference in Paris the “formal adoption of the roadmap for the accession of Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru and Romania” at the end of a meeting of ministers of the organization that brings together the world’s largest economies with democratic regimes.
“We warmly welcome these countries to the start of a positive and transformative process. We are also in positive talks with Argentina regarding the next steps in the accession process,” Cormann added, without elaborating.
The OECD announced in January the start of talks with these three Latin American and three European countries with a view to future membership in this currently 38-member club.
The next step was the approval of the roadmap that establishes the process and sets the conditions of membership. The OECD It will conduct technical examinations in areas such as trade, investment, anti-corruption and climate change.
Four Latin American countries —Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico— are already part of the organization founded in 1961 and whose members represent regarding 80% of world trade and investment.
Adherence to the OECD It is a flag of the Brazilian Minister of Economy, the ultra-liberal Paulo Guedes, and the approval of the road map occurs less than four months before the presidential elections in that country, in which the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro will seek a second term.
After the announcement of the beginning of the discussions in January, Guedes considered that the process of access to the OECD it was “an acknowledgment” that Brazil is “a great country”.
The Peruvian president, the leftist Pedro Castillo, also thanked that decision at the time and affirmed that his government reiterated “its commitment to the values of the OECD for the benefit of its population.
