the odyssey of the giles is a film so intrinsically Argentinian that its very title, which is difficult to translate (but still translated as “The Revenge of the Losers”), evokes tango tunes. In slangword gil (and its derivatives gilún, gilastrun) refers to the idea of an idiot, dupe, credulous person. The word also reminds us of the famous tango phrase stagger : “El que no llora no mama y el que no afana es un gil” (Who does not yell does not eat and who does not steal is an idiot – a gil).
Like the movie, stagger reflects the view, prevalent in Argentine society (and probably beyond), that the rich and powerful are all thieves and corrupt, while the honest people, the workers struggling to make ends meet, are seen as idiots, giles.
Playpen
the odyssey of the giles, takes place once morest a very real background of economic, political and social crisis. In 2001, to put an end to the race for liquidity and the flight of capital, the Argentinian government decided to introduce economic measures, called playpen, which restrict citizens’ access to their bank accounts. These measures cause general panic, everyone trying to recover their savings. Many Argentines are ruined but, as often in these cases, a small elite benefits from the crisis.
Very local characters
The film, adapted from the novel by Eduardo Sacheri, The night of the factoryrecounts the efforts of the inhabitants of the village of Alsina to recover the money that the financial system confiscated from them. Sebastian Borenszteinin charge of the staging, accurately depicts the landscapes and settings where the characters evolve.
Skilfully interpreted, the banker Alvarado (Luciano Cazaux) and the lawyer Fortunato Manzi (Andres Parra) perfectly embody the corrupt elites, while the inhabitants of Alsina represent the despoiled population. The characters of the villagers – a former soccer player (Ricardo Darin), his wife (Verónica Llinás) and their son (Chinese Darin), an entrepreneur (Rita Cortese), un artisan local (Luis Brandoni), a Peronist railwayman (Daniel Araos) and a Falklands ex-combatant (Carlos Belloso) – form a representative mosaic of Argentine society and are undoubtedly the strong point of the film.
the odyssey of the giles, like a symbolic revenge of the dispossessed Argentines on those who provoked the crisis and did not suffer the consequences, generates a cathartic effect. This perhaps explains the great success that the film enjoyed locally, to the point of being selected to represent the country in the category of best international film at the 92th Oscar ceremony.
However, as a plea to people who are suffering all over the world, the film speaks a language that transcends borders as the issue of the people in the face of the greed and voracity of those in power is universal. Despite the dramatic context, the odyssey of the giles is full of touches of humor, keeps a good rhythm and never drops in intensity.
