It still takes an average of five years in Canada to be diagnosed with endometriosis. This disease, characterized by the presence of tissues outside the uterus which creates great pain and causes various symptoms, is still considered taboo, believes the founder of Endometriosis Quebec Marie-Josée Thibert. But more than that, it is very difficult to diagnose, and people are slow to consult.
« Unfortunately, there are still too many people who think that pain around the menstrual cycle is normal. […] I want to say today that it is false. »
From the moment we have pain that prevents us from functioning, it is not normal
she insists.
In this interview, Marie-Josée Thibert also explains that gynecologists have not always received the training to diagnose this disease, which is a bit like a subspecialty, she says.
