The OAS condemns the request for the arrest of Edmundo González and calls for an international response

Washington, Sep 3 (EFE).- The Organization of American States (OAS) on Tuesday condemned the arrest warrant against Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia and stressed that Political persecution “constitutes one more crime” in the permanent and continuous legal logic of systematic violation of human rights in the country.”

“Once again, the judiciary in Venezuela has committed acts that point to it as a key instrument in the execution of crimes against humanity in the country,” said the secretary general of that organization, Uruguayan Luis Almagro, in a statement.

In your opinion, The Venezuelan judiciary is not one “that administers justice, but repression and violation of fundamental freedoms”and which becomes the main agent of impunity for human rights violations.”

A Venezuelan court specializing in terrorism-related crimes issued an arrest warrant against González Urrutia on Monday, less than an hour after the prosecutor’s office requested it, after the politician failed to appear at three previous summonses.

The opposition leader is accused of “usurpation of functions”, “forgery of public documents”, “instigation to disobedience of laws”, “conspiracy”, “sabotage to damage systems and association (to commit a crime)”.

“Expecting Venezuelan prosecutors, magistrates and judges to eventually do justice is a legal nonsense, but it also entails an even greater ethical and moral nonsense, by continuing to expose the Venezuelan people to the systematic policies of crimes against humanity of the Venezuelan regime,” said Almagro.

For the OAS representative, “respect for guarantees and conditions of the rule of law requires international action and not inaction.”
