The number of vehicle robberies and thefts increases in Brazil

According to data from PNAD Continuous (Continuous National Household Sample Survey), carried out by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), in 2021, 564 thousand incidents of robberies and vehicle thefts were recorded in Brazil, covering cars and motorcycles. This is equivalent to an average of 64 incidents of robbery and vehicle theft per hour in the country.

The survey also revealed that, in the same period, there were 342,000 vehicle thefts in Brazil, 192,000 of which were cars and 150,000 motorcycles, in addition to 388,000 records of bicycle thefts. With regard to occurrence records, the year 2021 recorded 222 thousand cases, with 117 thousand of them related to cars and 105 thousand to motorcycles

Regarding regional distribution, the Southeast region had the highest total rate of thefts of all types, representing 55.3% of vehicle thefts, 64.1% of car thefts and 44.0% of motorcycle thefts last year . Public roads were the most frequent places where car (75.1%) and motorcycle (68.8%) thefts occurred.

The director of Easyseg, Michael Hoppe, considers the data worrying, as the high rates of theft also reflect the increase in the cost of protection measures, such as traditional vehicle insurance, which with the latest increases have made it impossible for a large portion of the population to maintain an active plan. Indeed, according to IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index), vehicle insurance became, on average, 32% more expensive during 2022.

“I believe this is one of the main factors that has contributed to drivers looking for a vehicle tracker”, he says. According to Hoppe, the vehicle tracker is extremely important in two scenarios. “Initially as a means of preventing robbery or theft and as an advanced and intelligent feature, which following an emergency can be used promptly to protect your vehicle,” he said.

Vehicle trackers as an alternative to insurance

The director highlights that, in addition to visualizing the position of your vehicle in real time, modern trackers have technologies and tools that help people. He explains that, through an application, the person can activate the ignition alert when the vehicle is started, blocking the vehicle and “preventing the criminal from being able to move too far from the position where the accident occurred”.

Hoppe explains that, following hiring a monitoring company, the tracker is installed in a strategic location on the vehicle. And, following the procedure, he begins to communicate with the monitoring center of the company that was hired. The director adds that some trackers still rely on telemetry data.

“The customer will have access to data, such as fuel usage, journey history, speed report, etc.”, he says. “It is still possible to count on vehicle assistance plans, which help in necessary situations, such as tire changes, mechanical problems, towing and dry breakdowns”, he explains.

The high rate of vehicle robberies and thefts has been a constant concern in many regions of Brazil. These crimes not only cause significant financial losses for property owners, but also contribute to an increase in crime and affect the population’s sense of security.
