The number of lost or damaged bags has increased faster than air traffic in one year

Here’s something to hang around for a while. A total of 26 million incidents related to air travel passenger baggage were recorded worldwide in 2022. The previous year, when the effects of the coronavirus health crisis were still heavily felt, this figure reached 9.9 million. So that between 2021 and 2022, the increase in the number of delayed, lost or damaged suitcases was greater than that of the number of travellers.

Statistics seen at airports around the world last year correspond to 7.6 baggage incidents per 1,000 air travelers, compared to 4.35 in 2021. In 2022, 3.4 billion travelers used air transport . A record was set in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, with a total of 4.5 billion air journeys made in one year and 5.6 baggage incidents per 1,000 people.

Bad luck in European airports

Passengers on international flights are the most likely to experience baggage inconvenience, according to data gathered from 500 airlines serving 2,800 destinations worldwide. European airports have experienced a significant deterioration in baggage-related services, with an incident rate multiplied by three.

Nicole Hogg, director of the “baggage management” branch of the International Aeronautical Telecommunications Company (Sita), at the origin of the statistics, explains this phenomenon in particular by the saturation of airports. “The sector has experienced a faster recovery than expected following the pandemic”, with the key “staff shortages” and “inexperienced employees”, analyzes the specialist.
