Lhe number of over-indebted people in France is increasing. According to the Banque de France, over-indebtedness cases increased by 8% in 2023, a consequence of the health crisis. 121,000 files were registered with an average debt of 25,000 euros, according to information from RTL.

While one might believe that inflation is responsible for this increase, it is in reality explained by a post-health crisis catch-up effect. After the crisis, French consumption started to rise once more. At the same time, the exceptional aid linked to Covid-19 ended, causing over-indebtedness cases to soar by 7% in 2022 and by 8% in 2023, while they had decreased by a quarter in 2020.

Women are more affected

In most cases, these financial problems arise from job loss, separation or even illness. According to the Banque de France, the people most affected are single-parent families and women, over-represented in the files submitted. The figures, although increasing, remain below those of 2019, considered the reference year when file submissions jumped by 16%.
