From 2026 onwards, teams will have more testing opportunities in Formula 1. Racing teams will be able to test over nine days instead of the final three, which will be spread over three dates before the start of the season. This was announced following a Formula 1 committee meeting in London on Wednesday.
For the 2026 season, Formula 1 is undergoing a rules revolution. By then, the electric share of the hybrid drive will increase to 50%, while the internal combustion engine will have to run entirely on “sustainable fuels”, as they say. The car has also become lighter, with the minimum weight dropping from 798kg to 768kg. According to the regulator, downforce is reduced by 30% and aerodynamic drag is reduced by 55%.
Points awarded remain unchanged
However, the awarding of points will not change. As world automobile association FIA announced, it was a “unanimous decision” that no changes would be made.
Currently, the Grand Prix winner gets 25 points, second place gets 18 points, and third place gets 15 points. One suggestion is that points remain unchanged until seventh place, after which 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 should be awarded, up to 12th place. However, the points system was not changed at a meeting attended by Formula 1 managing director Stefano Domenicali.
According to the professional portal “motorsport.com”, lower-ranked racing teams are particularly interested in a wider distribution of points, which can bring them more bonuses when the prize money is distributed.
