The number of cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry decreased in Latvia last year / Diena

At the end of 2022, according to preliminary data, there were 391,400 cattle in Latvia, which is 0.5% less than a year earlier, including the number of dairy cows decreased by 2.6% – to 127,800.

According to the Statistical Office, the biggest decrease in the number of milking cows last year was in farms with up to five milking cows – by 11.4% or 1400, while in farms with 300 or more milking cows, their number increased by 6.1% or 1900.

Last year, the decrease in the number of milking cows was observed in all regions, including the biggest one in Zemgale – by 3.8% or 900.

At the same time, the number of pigs decreased by 5.8% last year – to 307,900, while the number of sheep decreased by 3.3% and was 87,300, while the number of goats increased by 2.5%, reaching 11,700. On the other hand, the number of horses in Latvia last year grew by 3.3%, reaching 8,700 at the end of the year.

At the same time, the number of poultry in Latvia decreased by 1.9% in 2022, amounting to 5.744 million at the end of the year, including the number of laying hens decreased by 1.5% – to 3.343 million.

The Statistical Office also informs that the number of exported live cattle in 2022, compared to the previous year, increased by 6.7% or 4100. The number of imported cattle decreased by 48% or 2200.

The export of live pigs in 2022 decreased by 7.8% or 16,100 compared to 2021. Of the total number of exported pigs, 69.3% were piglets for further fattening (in 2021 – 73.8%). The number of imported pigs decreased by 27.4% or 25,500.

The number of live sheep exported in 2022 decreased by 7% compared to 2021.
